Is Homosexuality Unnatural?

Now despite the BUSH & HOLSINGER® brand of insipid, religious idiocy, whether or not homosexuality is natural or not is irrelevant. First of all, psychiatry and psychology long ago discarded the notion that homosexuality is a "mental disorder," "disease," or "illness." Homosexuality is found throughout nature, not just in humans.

In any case, whether or not it is "unnatural" is a concern that could only be based on the "naturalistic fallacy," which is the notion that if something is not commonly found in nature (and again, homosexuality is found throughout the natural world) it is somehow "bad" or "perverted" and it ought to be opposed. Indeed, there are many things found in the natural world that are abominations. For examples, just consider the AIDS virus, the malaria carrying mosquito, and the ubiquitous human propensity to engage in war. Just because something is or isn't "natural," i.e., is commonly found in nature or is rare, doesn't tell us whether or not we should honor or oppose it.

The Ten Commandments is largely a list of natural (again, common, ubiquitous) human behaviors found in all known human societies that we feel we should oppose. Not to mention the whole complex of laws we have since developed to counteract all-too-natural political corruption, corporate greed, and myriad other abuses of power. We honor many unnatural (rare) human behaviors such as extreme self-sacrifice and altruism. We give Nobel Peace Prizes and Olympic Gold Medals to behaviors that are extremely far from the norm and often quite "unnatural."

In a world of abundance and "naturally" self-interested marketers, obesity becomes "the norm."

So whether or not something is common, the norm, or "natural" is simply irrelevant in determining whether or not we should honor or oppose it. Our moral judgments and values must be based on other concerns.

The True Abomination: Disrespecting Human Divinity

Though there are many debates and passionate feelings (pun intended) about human sexuality, there are a few things about which we can be sure:

• There is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that there exists an all-powerful, human-like Creator with humanoid concerns, not to mention one who has an obsessional preoccupation about what His creation does with its genitalia.
   
• Despite the fact that just about any human action can, under certain circumstances, result in harm, there is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that the sexual freedom of adults to engage in any form of reasonably safe (i.e., with care to prevent disease, unwanted pregnancy, and/or other harm) consensual sex has any particular, direct, destructive impact, even on those who may be "offended" by certain sexual proclivities.
   
• Regardless of sexual orientation, all sentient human beings are sacred, divine beings. [How absurd that this even needs to be stated!]
   
• All sacred human beings come into the world with equal unalienable Rights. That among these Rights are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
   
• The freedom of ALL humans to pursue happiness is a basic human right that must never be obstructed (unless, of course, it can be shown that specific actions deprive others of their Liberty or ability to pursue happiness or seriously weaken the community's ability to protect our rights).

With these understandings, consider the powerful video commentaries on this page. Later, you may want to ponder why it is that (other than gay rights activists) only the court jesters are speaking these truths so loudly, clearly, and unflinchingly.

So what exactly is wrong with gay marriage?

1) Being gay is not natural. Normal people always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, antibiotics, and air conditioning.

2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because if a gay person can enter into a marriage contract then a dog has legal standing and can also sign a marriage contract.

4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal. This demonstrates that marriage is never meant to change.

5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children and the orphanages aren't full yet. The world needs more children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry.

7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In any normal state theocracy, the values of one religion should be imposed on the entire country. For example, this is why there is only one religion in America and, according to John McCain, the U.S. Constitution declared that "America is a Christian nation."

9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars or cellphones and will never adapt to computers and the Internet.

"The West Wing" TV show presents us with a nice fantasy: What would it be like if America elected an intelligent, enlightened president who could speak yos mind directly, without worrying about offending religious nincompoops. Here we see a fictional response to Dr. Jacob, a thinly veiled stand-in for "Dr. Laura," the pompous, self-righteous, religious pinhead, talk-show host.

Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance.

Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world in which our intelligent leaders actually responded to such lunacy like this:

Why Can't I Own a Canadian?

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no social contact whatsoever with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. An abomination is an abomination. God doesn't play with words. I'm sure you can settle this?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging and unequivocal.
